Somebody e-mailed me for help with the song "Oh Sail Away." Since it's one of my favorite
Stewart Trio songs, I thought I'd post my response here.

The song is in the key of A Major (Guitar=key of G, capo 2; banjo=key of G, G tuning, capo 2).
The unusual chord in this song is F Minor Sixth. To play it on guitar, barre the first three
strings at the 1st fret, leave the 4th string open, play the 5th string at the 3rd fret with
your 3rd finger, and play the 6th string at the 1st fret with your thumb. On banjo, barre
the first three strings at the 1st fret and play the 1st string at the 3rd fret (4th string

One essential thing is to tune the 5th string up to match the first string fretted at the 12th fret on standard G tuning. This is easier on a long neck when playing without capo in key of E. On a regular neck this might be tough if your banjo doesn't have a 5th string capo or spikes.


 

Razors In the Air

"Razors in the Air" is in the key of G and Dave's banjo is in G tuning (gDGBD). The most striking thing about his banjo work here is his use of cam-type D-tuners (the predecessor of Scruggs-Keith tuners) on his 2nd and third strings. These allowed him to retune his 2nd string from B to A and his third string from G to F#, quickly and effortlessly (which results in an open D Major chord). In the TAB, the downward tuning of a string is indicated by "<" and the upward tuning is indicated by ">." Here's what the opening looks like:

The First Time

Hi...Here is my take on the chords in the key of C at the 4th fret, but u may play it in the key of D on the sec. fret. The intro chords in this key is like an (Am7 to a C note), finger picking 4, 3, 2 on Am7, then lifting the fretted note on the 4th string and playing only the C note, 4, 3, 2 ). On the Am7 you are only fretting two strings, the sec and fourth. Lead notes will follow in the key of D.

Regarding the Intro.: What's happening there (and in the first verse) is a repeated change back and forth between E7 (022130) to E6 (022120). The exact intro. might be hard to duplicate if you're playing solo since I believe Bob was strumming those chords in the first position while Dave was doing a lead line up the neck. Anway, "Bob's part" would be something like this (down-up-down-up with flatpick--or down with thumb, up with first finger, brush down with several fingers, up with first finger):
